CELPIP test format and duration: timing for all four skills
Check CELPIP-General test duration, the four skills in order and each section’s timing, then plan a focused free practice session.

The practical answer
CELPIP-General takes under three hours in one sitting, according to CELPIP’s General test page. It covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The published component times are 46–55, 43–56, 53 and 15 minutes respectively; follow each on-screen clock during the test.
Try the timing in free practice
Use one skill first if a complete rehearsal is too much today. No account or payment is needed to begin.
- Choose one of the two free tests, then select a single skill or the complete test.
- Choose Timed to rehearse with the clocks, or Study to pause and review at your pace.
- Sign in after submitting to save your results and review Listening and Reading answer-key accuracy. Use Writing and Speaking self-review guidance to choose one improvement; these are not official proficiency scores.
How long is the CELPIP-General test?
CELPIP describes the four-skill General test as taking under three hours in one sitting, including Speaking. This guide covers that four-skill test; the Listening-and-Speaking-only LS test has a different duration. Source: CELPIP-General test page, checked September 20, 2026.
Use the component times below to plan practice. They are published ranges, not a promise of an identical session length for every test. Do not add the maximum of each range and treat that sum as your appointment duration. Confirm arrival and check-in requirements in your own booking instructions.
- Listening: 46–55 minutes across six parts.
- Reading: 43–56 minutes across four parts.
- Writing: 53 minutes for an email and a survey response.
- Speaking: 15 minutes across eight tasks.
What is the CELPIP test format and section order?
The official overview presents the components in this order: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening has six parts, Reading has four parts, Writing has two tasks and Speaking has eight tasks. These facts and the component times were checked against CELPIP’s Test Format & Scoring page on September 20, 2026.
The same official page explains that Listening and Reading include unscored development items that cannot be identified during the test. Give every question your best effort. A practice product’s fixed question total is therefore not a promise of the exact screen count you will encounter on test day.
Budget Writing as two separate pieces of work
The official 2026 Overview Study Pack gives 27 minutes for the email and 26 for the survey response, with 150–200 words requested for each. This is a useful distinction: finishing the email does not mean you have practised choosing and supporting a survey position. For an email rehearsal, try spending a few minutes identifying the recipient and required outcomes, most of the time drafting, and the final minutes checking purpose and missing details. Treat that division as a starting experiment. If you repeatedly run out of time, shorten planning notes before you remove the final check.
Run one realistic rehearsal, then diagnose it
Before starting, arrange a quiet space, headphones, a working microphone and a keyboard you can use comfortably. Test recording and playback with an ordinary sentence. A silent saved file tells you about equipment, not speaking ability. Keep your device plugged in and close unrelated notifications so the session tests the workflow you intended.
During the rehearsal, record only useful observations: where you lost time, which instruction you misread, and whether you could finish a response before its window closed. Avoid stopping to research a word or rewrite a completed section. Afterwards, revisit those moments in study mode, where repeated listening and slower analysis have a different purpose.
Separate timing problems from language problems
A correct answer reached after repeated replay demonstrates something different from a correct first-pass answer. Keep both results, but label them. Likewise, a well-developed email written in forty minutes gives you material to revise; it does not yet show that you can produce the same work in the allocated window.
Use a small timing log with three columns: task, obstacle, next experiment. “Reading took too long” is vague. “I reopened the entire passage for each detail question; next time I will mark each paragraph’s purpose first” is actionable. Repeat the experiment on unfamiliar material rather than judging improvement from a passage you now remember.
Choose the next session from evidence
If the clocks felt comfortable but your answers were weak, work on evidence and comprehension. If you understood the sources but left questions unfinished, practise a smaller timed group and review how you allocated attention. If Speaking recording failed, solve that setup problem before attempting another full session.

Take this into your next session
- Check current official timing before your test.
- Keep first-pass work separate from untimed revisions.
- Record one specific timing experiment for your next session.
