CELPIP Listening practice: library pickup lockers

Listen to an original announcement, answer three questions and check the transcript and distractor explanations.

By MockMaple · Updated

Try the prompt

Listen to the announcement before opening the transcript. Note who the service is for, its deadline and the fallback arrangement.

  • A short original information exercise, not a complete official-format Listening part.
  • The audio uses a synthetic voice. You may replay it while learning.

Plan your approach

  1. Listen once for the main purpose.
  2. Listen again for the deadline and exceptions.
  3. Check the transcript only after choosing your answers.

Listen, then check the transcript

Synthetic narration of the original announcement.

The library’s new pickup lockers will be available from Monday. They are outside the east entrance, so you can collect reserved books even when the building is closed. To use a locker, choose the locker option when you reserve a book. Once your books are ready, we will email you an access code. Please wait for that message before coming to collect them. Your code will work for three days after the email is sent. If you cannot collect your books within that period, call the library. Staff may be able to extend the reservation, but an extension is not automatic. After the code expires, you should not assume your books are still in the locker. Large items, including board games, must still be collected from the service desk during opening hours. The lockers are for collection only. Please return borrowed items through the usual return slot beside the main entrance. If you do not use email, speak to staff about collection at the service desk. That option remains available. The lockers add another way to collect books; they do not replace the desk service.

Why these choices work

A response or interpretation to improve

The lockers are outside, so every library service must now be available at any time.

Separate the service from its limits

The lockers allow after-hours collection of eligible reserved books. Large items and returns follow different arrangements.

Notice what starts the clock

The three-day period starts when the email is sent, not when the reservation is first made.

Vocabulary in context

expire

Reach the end of a period of validity.

The access code expires after three days.

Choose the right alternative: Close usually describes a place or service stopping operation; expire describes validity ending.

Usage note: A code expires; the sentence does not say your library membership expires.

extension

Extra time added to an existing period.

Call to ask for an extension.

Choose the right alternative: Renewal starts or continues a period under its own rules; do not assume it is automatic here.

Usage note: May be able to is not a promise that staff will grant the request.

Check your understanding

Choose an answer to see the evidence and an explanation for every option. These checks are not a proficiency score.

1. When should a user come to collect reserved books?
2. What should someone do if they cannot collect within three days?
3. Where should a reserved board game be collected?
All answers and explanations

When should a user come to collect reserved books?

Answer: After receiving the access-code email.

Evidence: Please wait for that message before coming to collect them.

  • Immediately after reserving.: The books may not be ready immediately.
  • After receiving the access-code email.: The announcement explicitly says to wait for the message.
  • Only when the building is open.: The lockers are outside and support collection while the building is closed.

What should someone do if they cannot collect within three days?

Answer: Call the library about an extension.

Evidence: If you cannot collect your books within that period, call the library.

  • Assume the code will renew automatically.: An extension is explicitly not automatic.
  • Put a note in the return slot.: The return slot is for borrowed items, not this request.
  • Call the library about an extension.: Calling is the stated next step; approval remains conditional.

Where should a reserved board game be collected?

Answer: At the service desk during opening hours.

Evidence: Large items, including board games, must still be collected from the service desk during opening hours.

  • At the service desk during opening hours.: Large items including board games use the service desk.
  • From any locker at night.: The announcement excludes these large items from locker collection.
  • From the return slot.: The return slot is for returns, not collection.

Try a new situation

Without looking at the transcript, explain the collection process to a friend in three sentences. Then check your deadline and exception details.

Use your own notes or voice recorder, then check your work:

  • Did you wait for the readiness message?
  • Did you attach three days to the correct starting event?
  • Did you distinguish collection from returns?
