Test choice
CELPIP vs IELTS for Canada: how to choose (then practise)
Both CELPIP-General and IELTS GT work for Express Entry. Compare format, speaking style, and scoring — then practise CELPIP free on MockMaple if you choose it.
MockMaple is an online CELPIP practice site for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Learners start with two free tests, then buy one-time Starter, Plus or Complete packs (CAD, 90 days, unlimited retries) — no subscription. Study mode supports learning with explanations; Timed mode rehearses test pace. Results show answer-key accuracy and self-review guidance, not a validated CELPIP or CLB score.

The practical answer
Canada’s Express Entry pathway accepts CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training. IRCC does not prefer one over the other — choose the format you can rehearse more reliably, then practise that format. If you lean CELPIP, start free on MockMaple.
Side-by-side: CELPIP-General vs IELTS GT
Soft comparison only. Confirm current rules and conversion tables on IRCC’s language tests page before you book.
Neither format is “easier” for everyone. Typing comfort, mic comfort, accent familiarity, and whether you want a live examiner usually matter more than internet myths.
| Dimension | CELPIP-General | IELTS General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Fully computer-based; typically one sitting | Paper or computer; Speaking often scheduled separately |
| Speaking | Recorded responses to a microphone | Live interview with an examiner |
| Accents | Often Canadian / North American emphasis | Mix of international accents |
| Score → CLB | Official CELPIP levels convert to CLB on IRCC’s chart — check IRCC, do not invent numbers here | IELTS bands convert to CLB on IRCC’s chart — check IRCC |
| Typical use | Strong Canadian immigration focus | Global recognition plus Canada pathways |
Who often prefers CELPIP
CELPIP may fit you if you:
If that sounds like you, rehearse the pace with a free Timed attempt — especially Speaking — before you book the real exam.
- Are comfortable typing and working entirely on a computer
- Prefer recording Speaking answers to a mic over a live interview
- Are used to Canadian / North American accents
- Want Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking in one computer sitting
Who often prefers IELTS
IELTS General Training may fit you if you:
That is a valid choice. MockMaple is CELPIP practice software — we do not run IELTS prep. Use official IELTS materials if you stay on that path.
- Prefer a human Speaking partner and live back-and-forth
- Have already trained for IELTS Academic or GT
- Have easier access to an IELTS centre where you live than to CELPIP
CLB targets: check IRCC, don’t invent numbers
People often search for CLB 7 or CLB 9 because those levels show up in Canada immigration conversations. The exact Language Test Equivalency Chart — and which level your program needs — belongs on IRCC / Canada.ca, not on a practice site.
MockMaple does not predict your CLB. We show answer-key accuracy for Listening and Reading, and self-review guidance for Writing and Speaking.
- Look up the official conversion tables for CELPIP and IELTS on the IRCC language test results page.
- Do not rely on third-party screenshots or outdated blogs for cutoffs.
If you chose CELPIP: practise next
Once you lean CELPIP, build familiarity with the format, then rehearse under time:
- Learn the clock — CELPIP test format and timing.
- Pick a practice mode — Study mode vs Timed mode.
- Own Speaking — CELPIP Speaking practice and the eight Speaking tasks.
- Decide free vs paid volume — Free vs paid CELPIP practice.

What MockMaple is not
MockMaple is independent practice software. We are not Paragon Testing Enterprises, not an official CELPIP partner, and not affiliated with IRCC. We do not guarantee scores, we do not sell subscriptions, and we do not claim CELPIP is easier or preferred for immigration.
For authentic samples from the test maker, use CELPIP’s free resources. For acceptance rules and CLB conversion, use IRCC / Canada.ca.
FAQ
- Does IRCC prefer CELPIP or IELTS?
- No. For Express Entry, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training. Pick the format you can prepare for more reliably. Always confirm current acceptance on IRCC / Canada.ca.
- Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?
- Not universally. They are different tests. Some people find recorded Speaking and a single computer sitting easier; others prefer a live examiner and may already know the IELTS format. “Easier” depends on you — not on a ranking from a practice site.
- Can MockMaple tell me my CLB?
- No. MockMaple shows answer-key accuracy for Listening and Reading, plus self-review guidance for Writing and Speaking. That is not a validated CELPIP or CLB score.
- Is CELPIP-LS enough for Express Entry or PR?
- CELPIP-LS covers Listening and Speaking only (it appears in some citizenship-related paths). Express Entry language requirements generally need the full CELPIP-General (all four skills) or IELTS General Training. Check IRCC for the test type your application needs.
- Do I need a subscription to practise CELPIP on MockMaple?
- No. You can start with two free four-skill tests. Extra inventory is sold as one-time Starter, Plus, or Complete packs in CAD — 90 days, unlimited retries on the tests you pick. No subscription.
