CELPIP survey example: weekend library hours

A complete survey answer comparing weekend opening with a larger digital collection.

By MockMaple · Updated

Try the prompt

Your local library can fund either Sunday afternoon opening or more digital books. Choose one option and explain why it would be more useful. Write about 150–200 words.

  • The budget can fund only one option.
  • The library already has a digital collection.
  • The building is currently closed on Sundays.

Plan your approach

  1. Choose Sunday opening.
  2. Develop access and study-space benefits.
  3. Acknowledge digital convenience and explain the priority.

Complete sample response

I would choose Sunday afternoon opening because it would give more residents a practical opportunity to use the library building. A larger digital collection would be convenient, but it would not replace the services available in person. For people who work during the week, Sunday may be the easiest time to visit. A parent could bring a child to choose books without rushing after school, while a worker could ask staff for help finding information. Even a few additional hours would create an option that does not currently exist. The building also provides somewhere to read and study. For example, a resident sharing a crowded apartment could use a desk to prepare for an exam. Downloading another book would not solve that person’s lack of a quiet workspace. I recognize that digital books can be borrowed without travelling and are especially useful to some readers. However, the library already offers a digital collection. I would prioritize a trial of Sunday opening, then review attendance and feedback before deciding whether to continue it. This would let the library test the demand while keeping the existing digital service.

Why these choices work

A response or interpretation to improve

Sunday is better because everyone is free on Sunday and digital books are useless.

Choose without dismissing the alternative

The first paragraph establishes a priority while recognizing that digital borrowing has value.

Develop distinct reasons

The second paragraph concerns access to in-person services; the third concerns physical study space. Each includes a person and a concrete use.

Limit unsupported claims

May and could avoid claiming that every resident shares the same schedule. A trial and review offer a way to test demand instead of assuming it.

Vocabulary in context

prioritize

Give something greater importance or earlier attention.

I would prioritize Sunday opening.

Choose the right alternative: Prefer expresses a liking; prioritize identifies what should come first.

Usage note: Prioritize does not mean the other option has no value.

on balance

After considering benefits and drawbacks.

On balance, Sunday opening offers the more useful addition.

Choose the right alternative: Overall gives a general assessment; on balance emphasizes weighing considerations.

Usage note: Use it after developing reasons, not as a substitute for them.

1. Which claim goes beyond the supplied facts?
All answers and explanations

Which claim goes beyond the supplied facts?

Answer: Every resident is free on Sunday.

Evidence: The building is currently closed on Sundays.

  • The library is closed on Sundays.: This is explicitly provided.
  • The library already has digital books.: This is explicitly provided.
  • Every resident is free on Sunday.: No information establishes every resident’s schedule.

Try a new situation

A community centre can fund either longer evening opening or additional online workshops. Choose one and explain two benefits, while acknowledging a reason someone might prefer the alternative.

Use your own notes or voice recorder, then check your work:

  • Is your position clear from the opening?
  • Do your reasons explain different benefits?
  • Have you avoided inventing survey results or universal preferences?
