CELPIP Writing Task 2: live workshops or recorded training

Defend a workplace training choice with practical reasons and a response to a genuine drawback.

By MockMaple · Updated

Try the prompt

Your workplace is choosing between monthly live workshops and a library of recorded training videos. Select one and explain your reasons in 150–200 words.

  • The options are a live workshop each month or recorded training videos.
  • You may describe plausible needs without inventing company statistics.

Plan your approach

  1. Choose the option that addresses a stated learning need.
  2. Develop two connected reasons.
  3. Recognise a drawback and suggest a limited mitigation.

Complete sample response

I would prefer monthly live workshops because employees need opportunities to ask questions about how a procedure applies to their own work. A recorded explanation can introduce a process, but it cannot respond when someone has misunderstood a particular step. In a live session, the trainer could demonstrate a task and then ask participants to try a short example. If several people make the same mistake, the trainer can explain that point again before anyone uses the procedure with a customer. Employees could also learn from questions raised by colleagues in other departments. I recognise that finding a suitable time for everyone would be difficult, especially for staff working different shifts. The company could offer the same workshop at two times and provide a brief written summary for reference afterward. This would not remove every scheduling problem, but it would make attendance more manageable. Overall, I would choose live workshops for their immediate feedback and discussion. A video library would be convenient, yet convenience alone would not meet the need for supported practice.

Why these choices work

A response or interpretation to improve

Videos are boring and nobody learns from them. Workshops are perfect and have no disadvantages.

Explain the learning advantage

The demonstration and short practice task show how live feedback could prevent a misunderstanding from reaching customer work.

Acknowledge a real limitation

Two sessions may help scheduling but do not solve every conflict. The wording preserves that uncertainty instead of overstating the workaround.

What advantage is central to the choice?

Answer: Immediate feedback on misunderstandings

Evidence: it cannot respond when someone has misunderstood a particular step.

  • Guaranteed attendance: Scheduling remains a challenge.
  • Immediate feedback on misunderstandings: The response repeatedly develops feedback and questions.
  • Lower production costs: Costs are not discussed.

Try a new situation

Choose between individual online study and a weekly study group. Explain which better fits a particular learning need and address one limitation.

Use your own notes or voice recorder, then check your work:

  • Do the reasons match the chosen option?
  • Have you avoided dismissing the alternative as useless?
  • Is the proposed mitigation presented realistically?
